House committee unanimously backs resolution recognizing education support professionals (HJR 31)

Testimony highlighted that ESPs ‘‘are the glue’’ of schools, build student relationships, support vulnerable learners, and often remain in roles despite modest pay because of dedication to students. Witnesses said recognition is overdue and noted the fiscal reality that many ESPs work only the school year.
Committee members commented in support. Representative Strand asked why April 3 was chosen; Representative Joy said April 3 is the nationally recognized day of appreciation for education support professionals. Representative Eisley moved and Representative Visley seconded a motion that the joint resolution do pass; the committee took a voice vote and the resolution was approved and sent to the House floor.
Why it matters: supporters framed the resolution as symbolic recognition of a workforce group that maintains daily school operations and supports student learning; witnesses asked that recognition accompany broader efforts to ensure ESPs can support families and stay employed.
