On farmland preservation the liaison said the county’s allocation from the state for preservation will be $2,270,000, representing 5.28% of the statewide $43,000,000 allocation; that allocation is up $200,000 from the prior year. The liaison said the 2024 round of farms for preservation started with seven farms selected and is now down to three, with one slated for purchase by Silver Spring and another dependent on uncertain federal funding. The liaison said approximately $500,000 of carryover funds could move into the 2025 round because of state delays.
Commissioners discussed workforce and internship initiatives: a career-exploration presentation involved four interns from local high schools who highlighted county department workplace culture and work–life balance. The liaison also summarized attendance at regional forums, tourism and economic-development committee meetings, and noted that county staff and partners continue outreach on transportation and employment issues.
Separately, a commissioner raised concerns about possible cuts at the federal Department of Human Services that could reduce funding for addiction counseling, rehab and other human-service grants; the speaker said New York State officials are estimating large potential losses and that county staff are monitoring the risk and its possible budgetary impacts. Another commissioner provided updates from human services and advisory boards, reporting high intake and caseloads for IDD and early intervention, a forthcoming home-visitor safety training on April 4, and that household hazardous-waste collection events are scheduled (next event noted for April 10 at the recycling center with registration required).
