The contracts include two-year extensions and new agreements for multiple football assistants and staff: Jamarcus Shepherd (assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator) returned on a two-year deal at $1,100,000 per year; Ryan Grubb (assistant coach and offensive coordinator) on a two-year contract at $1,000,000 per year; Freddie Roach (associate head coach/defensive line) extended two years with a first-year salary of $1.2 million and $1.3 million in year two. Other approvals included David Baloo (director of sports performance) at $950,000 for a three-year extension, Jeff Allen (senior associate athletic director for health and performance) at $525,000 for three years, and Preston Murphy (men’s basketball assistant coach) at $675,000 through April 30, 2027.
The committee voted to consider the 17 items collectively and approved them by voice vote.
Why it matters: The contracts solidify the athletics staff roster ahead of upcoming seasons and reflect the university’s effort to remain competitive within the Southeastern Conference. Committee discussion centered on whether the packages matched marketplace norms and would promote continuity in the athletics department.
Greg Byrne, University of Alabama athletics director, told trustees the staff packages were shaped by market benchmarking. “There are play callers within the SEC that are in that range. And so it was a market rate for us,” Byrne said, adding that the university’s Chief Financial Officer (referred to in the meeting as Calvasey) and the athletics finance team monitor market levels for all sports.
Trustee questions focused on market comparators and whether the packages would help maintain staff stability for head coach DeBoer’s program; Byrne said the contracts were designed to do both. The committee moved and seconded consideration of the items collectively; after a brief opportunity for comment, the compensation committee approved the collective package by voice vote.
