District briefs board on playground asphalt replacement proposal and middle‑school asbestos abatement

Staff presented a KPN proposal for asphalt repairs and subgrade work to prepare for new poured‑rubber surfacing; the district said the surfacing contractor will remove and replace the rubber surfacing while the asphalt subcontractor (identified as Utilius in the presentation) would remove and replace the asphalt between two playground sections. Staff noted the KPN purchasing network option could be used or the district could solicit separate bids.
The board asked whether the same general contractor would perform all work; staff said the playground surfacing and the asphalt work are separate projects coordinated on the schedule and that the current quote is for asphalt work only. Staff said one of the other quotes for playground work was being addressed at no cost and that the district could take the asphalt proposal out to bid if the board preferred.
On middle‑school asbestos abatement, staff reported that original tile adhesive and many coats of wax have degraded and that adhesive loosening in several classrooms requires abatement and repair. The presentation said this is the first of three quotes and that the work is under the district’s procurement threshold; the district has used the recommended abatement contractor previously. A board member raised background‑check concerns for workers on some contracts and asked about scheduling abatement when children are not present; staff confirmed abatement is scheduled for the summer when students are out and said the district has used the contracting firm before without prior issues.
