Provo Education Association president urges board and voters to fund smaller classes and pay teachers more

Christie Giblin, a teacher at Shoreline Middle School and president of the Provo Education Association, urged the Provo City School Board on March 28 to prioritize higher funding for schools, smaller class sizes and competitive teacher pay.
"But the bottom line, I think, is how much do we value our children in Provo City School District and in the state of Utah?" Giblin said. She criticized a long-standing approach she described as "stack them deep and teach them cheap," and said the district needs "fully funding programs and having smaller class sizes, being able to hire appropriate support staff, and being able to pay our teachers so that they want to go into the profession and stay into the profession."
Giblin acknowledged broader cost pressures on households and said she pays property and income taxes willingly because she wants local children to be well educated and to support local businesses. She thanked the board for what she described as thoughtful consideration of both school needs and community accountability.
Board President Jennifer Partridge thanked Giblin and the board closed public comment before proceeding to the business agenda. No immediate board action resulted directly from the public comment during the meeting.
