House names Grand River bridge for Specialist Jacob Ashton

The Ohio House on March 20 unanimously approved House Bill 27 to name the bridge spanning the Grand River in Lake County the Specialist Jacob A. Ashton Memorial Bridge.
Representative Callender, who sponsored the bill, described Ashton as a native of the district who served in the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division, deployed to Iraq, and received multiple decorations including the Army Commendation Medal with device and the Combat Infantry Badge. Callender said Ashton planned to return to public service as a first responder but was murdered while stationed at his barracks after returning from deployment.
Representative Troy and others supported the naming to honor Ashton's service and memory. The House voted 92-0 to pass the bill on third consideration; the title was agreed to on the floor.
The bill designates the span on U.S. 90 in Lake County and will result in signage reflecting the memorial name once state signage procedures are completed.
