Resident urges stricter enforcement of overweight trucks on Crescent Bridge

A longtime neighbor pressed the Select Board to step up enforcement of overweight and oversized trucks on the Crescent Bridge, saying warnings from police have not changed driver behavior.

Lisa, a resident, told the board that while there are fewer very large trucks on the bridge, local drivers continue to cross it daily and contact her with photos instead of reporting incidents to police. “Don't tell me. Tell the police,” Lisa said when asked where she had been sending photos. She asked the board whether officers were issuing citations or only warnings and requested an unannounced enforcement day so drivers would not simply avoid scheduled enforcement times.

Board members said they would ask the police chief to provide a summary report listing the number of overweight citations or warnings issued over a recent period and to follow up on the resident’s request for targeted, unannounced enforcement patrols.

Lisa also asked whether the bridge's cameras could be streamed live on the town website or a social channel so residents could monitor activity. Board staff said they would check two items: (1) whether the state permits public access to camera feeds given privacy and license-plate concerns; and (2) whether the camera system itself can provide a live public stream. Town staff cautioned that prior legislation and system limitations may prevent public streaming.

The board agreed to pursue the resident's requests, asking staff to consult the police chief about citation counts and enforcement options and to report back on the feasibility of sharing a live camera view.
