The Sudden Valley Board of Directors spent more than an hour debating a proposed reorganization of the nonresident fee schedule for the pools and fitness center and approved one targeted change: a one‑time $8 access card fee for nonresidents who purchase a monthly pool membership.
Staff said the proposal was intended to align seasonal pricing and close gaps where nonresidents could buy a fitness membership but also use the pool without paying the higher seasonal pool rate. The proposal in board materials would have moved to a seasonal price structure that charges higher rates during the May‑to‑August pool season for nonmembers.
Kyle (Recreation Manager) explained the practical challenge: the facility currently cannot reliably distinguish whether a nonmember monthly pass buyer uses the pool or only the fitness center because the access system does not distinguish pool entry. Kyle said the proposal would create consistency by consolidating nonmember pricing and issuing time‑limited access cards for the months purchased.
Several directors pushed back on the draft pricing. Laurie (board director) said raising a year‑round nonresident fitness monthly pass from $35 to $75 for the pool season would “penalize” renters and occasional users and risk pushing users to other facilities; she called the proposed jump “a bad move” and said she would not support it. Other directors recommended alternatives such as a year‑round fitness monthly pass and a small seasonal add‑on for pool access, or simply keeping the current structure while staff studies usage and access controls.
After discussion the board voted to authorize an $8 access‑card fee for nonresidents who purchase a monthly pool membership so recreation staff can issue distinct, time‑limited cards; the motion passed. Directors did not adopt the broader seasonal price increases and asked staff to return with a revised fee schedule that addressed the cost logic and the practical limits of the existing access control system.
The board recorded the discussion as a management‑directed item: staff was asked to refine the table of fees, consider a year‑round $35 fitness pass with an optional pool add‑on, and to propose clearer language about renters, guests and short‑term rentals in the next packet.
