Needham working group advances road‑diet pilot for Needham Center; traffic study forecasts limited diversion

Tim Folger, chair of the Envisioned Even Center Project Working Group, opened the March 24 meeting by noting there was no quorum and that the session would be informational.

Consultants and town staff used the meeting to summarize recent outreach to businesses, present traffic‑diversion modeling for a proposed road‑diet pilot in Needham Center and show updated design alternatives and temporary materials for a pilot demonstration.

The meeting matters because the pilot would narrow travel lanes through the town center to create space for bike lanes, trees, wider sidewalks and placemaking. If the pilot proceeds, town staff and consultants will collect before‑and‑during traffic counts to test how drivers reroute and to shape long‑term design and mitigation.

Jim (Traffic consultant) told the group the team had shifted the technical focus from a long‑range model to near‑term scenarios that mirror the pilot. “We are instead focusing right now on what the traffic volumes and travel routes might be under the actual more near term pilot program,” he said, and described a three‑step approach: estimate trips that would divert from the center, identify the alternate routes those trips would take, and place counters on those alternate routes to measure change.

Consultants said the largest percentage diversion estimated in the models was 32% for one approach during an evening peak, which equated in their analysis to about 32 vehicles per hour on that…
