County court advances historic courthouse work, cybersecurity training and records preservation; several items tabled

Lavaca County commissioners conducted routine and substantive business on Feb. 10, approving several administrative and capital items and tabling two matters for later consideration.

Key approvals included: extending an existing courthouse assessment contract with WJE to pursue the next round of Texas Historical Commission restoration funds; enrollment in the Texas Association of Counties’ 2025 cybersecurity course to meet portions of Texas Government Code requirements; preservation and restoration of deed-record books (vols. 51–65) by Revolution Data Systems; transfer of obsolete IT equipment from the county clerk’s office to the county IT department for disposition; and certificates of exemption from subdivision requirements for two family property transfers. Commissioners also approved purchase authority to seek and acquire a 2020 Mack Anthem tractor truck for Precinct 2 for up to $35,000.

Two agenda items were tabled: an MOU with Gulf Bend Center to reimburse the county for transportation of mental-health patients (item 6) and a TxDOT sidewalk/entrance plan for the Lavaca County Annex (item 12) while staff pursues neighbor-easement options and additional drawings.

Other business: the court approved Addendum 11 between LGS and the Lavaca County Attorney’s Office to add a full licensed user (confirmed for an assistant county attorney in the district court exchange) and the court was introduced to Forrest Crocell Jr., the new assistant county attorney. Commissioners congratulated Commissioner Kenny Ziegel on acceptance into the County Commissioner Leadership Academy run by Texas A&M AgriLife’s V.G. Young Institute and approved departmental participation in cybersecurity training; Auditor Shaina Opiel led the cybersecurity discussion and said county staff involvement is necessary for grant certification.
