Council authorizes abatement for multiple public-nuisance properties after staff reports partial compliance

Beaumont City Council approved an ordinance ratifying public-health nuisance determinations and authorizing the city to abate specified properties if owners fail to remedy violations within 10 days.
Health Director Kenneth Coleman reviewed staff inspections for multiple properties citywide. Coleman told council that several parcels were still in violation of Chapter 10 (health and sanitation) and Chapter 12 (offenses and nuisances), pointing to litter, tents, and camping on some lots. He said two properties previously listed had been brought into compliance and therefore staff recommended removing them from the abatement ordinance.
At council request staff identified the nine properties under review; after inspection staff withdrew three properties from the abatement action (properties 1, 2, and 9 on the printed list) because they had been corrected. Council moved to approve the ordinance with the exceptions noted; the motion passed on a voice vote.
If owners fail to abate within the ten-day timeframe staff is authorized to abate the nuisances and recover costs via the city's usual collection process.
Ending: Staff said it will follow the ordinance's timeframes, report back on abatements performed and invoice owners for cleanup costs if the city undertakes abatement work.
