Lavaca County proclaims April as Child Abuse Prevention Month and Autism Acceptance Month

Lavaca County commissioners on Tuesday approved two proclamations recognizing April 2025: one declaring Child Abuse Prevention Month and another declaring Autism Acceptance Month.
The court read both proclamations and voted to approve them after short presentations from local advocates. Diane Novosod, introduced herself as executive director of NormaSos and quoted statewide and county figures: "In fiscal year 2024, approximately 293,950 Texas children were reported as victims of abuse or neglect. In Lavaca County, 189 children were designated victims of abuse or neglect," she said, adding that prevention "takes the whole community." The motion to approve the Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation was made by Precinct 2 and seconded by Precinct 1; the motion passed by voice vote.
Destiny Siptak, executive director of Turtle Wing Foundation, spoke in support of recognizing April as Autism Acceptance Month and described the foundation's mission serving rural children with learning challenges. The court approved the autism proclamation on a motion by Precinct 4, seconded by Precinct 3; the voice vote passed.
Why it matters
Both proclamations are ceremonial actions that the court said aim to raise public awareness and encourage partnerships between agencies, schools and the community. County leaders posed for photos with agency representatives following the votes.
