Youth representative program winding down; ombudsman and assembly plan recognition and outreach

Heather McAlpine, associate ombudsman, told the Rules Committee on March 19 that the youth representative program is nearing the end of the current term: two of three members are graduating in May. McAlpine said the program has expanded engagement, including a mentorship structure, monthly meetings and greater interaction between youth reps and assembly members.

McAlpine said the group established a dedicated message group, met monthly for mentoring sessions and held evening meetings to accommodate the reps’ schedules. She described outreach and recruitment efforts for the fall and said the office saw 14 applicants in its most recent recruitment cycle after having three in the program’s first year.

Assembly members praised McAlpine’s work and discussed plans to recognize the outgoing youth representatives. Chair Christopher Constant said members have invited the youth reps to participate in the April meetings tied to election certification and transition planning and suggested drafting a formal resolution for the April 22 meeting to celebrate their service.

Several assembly members encouraged better integration of youth representatives into meeting activities, including having the youth explain meeting procedures to visiting students and participating in recruitment conversations at local high schools. McAlpine said the office and assembly will continue monthly mentoring and will meet again at events tied to the homelessness summit.

No formal votes were recorded. Staff and members said they will pursue a resolution to recognize outgoing youth reps and continue recruitment for the fall term.
