The Streator City Council voted to adopt changes to municipal golf fees for Anderson Field and approved an amendment to treat non‑resident veterans the same as residents for fee purposes.
The measure matters because it adjusts user fees for a city-subsidized recreational facility and clarifies a veteran discount for non-residents. Council members said the increases are intended to keep rates affordable for residents while narrowing the subsidy the city provides for operating the course.
Tim Geary moved to adopt the ordinance amending Title 3, Section 3.48 of the municipal code on revenues, finance fees and deposits; Matt McMullen seconded the motion. During discussion, a staff member described the city’s goals: “The objective is to provide cheap golfing opportunities for our citizens,” the staff member said, noting the city subsidizes operations and that increases respond to rising operating costs.
Staff listed current resident rates in the ordinance packet as $4.50 for a single, $6.00 for a couple, $7.00 for a family and $2.60 for juniors. Staff said proposed increases would take effect immediately on adoption and that memberships are generally tied to the playable season rather than calendar months; staff said memberships are honored when the course is playable.
Council debated whether to add a military discount for non-resident veterans. A motion to treat non-resident veterans as residents for fee purposes passed; the council approved the ordinance as amended.
Clerk roll-call votes were recorded as: Dave Connor — Aye; Tim Geary — Aye; Matt McMullen — Aye; Dave Reed — Aye; Mary Beattie — Aye. The ordinance will be typed and reserved for final formatting after the meeting and was marked effective that night.
Council members and staff also discussed operational issues including clubhouse staffing, the honor system for membership verification on informal play days, and the aim to keep junior rates low to encourage youth participation.
