Council removes regional dispatch from committee as prospects dim

Fairview Park council on Jan. 13 voted to remove discussion of a regional dispatch center from committee after the mayor updated members on recent study results and local negotiations.
The mayor told council the regional effort examined three host-location options but that no municipality had volunteered to host a cog-controlled regional dispatch center, and that while the county identified roughly $3 million in potential funding, a host city was required for the plan to advance. The mayor said North Olmsted continues to provide dispatch and jail services under a vendor relationship and that moving police and fire dispatch into a single regional center faces political and operational obstacles.
Council member Troy, the city’s representative to the DEI coalition, asked whether the timing made removal premature; Troy said the DEI coalition plans to present to council soon and recommended leaving some items in committee until presentations occur. After discussion, council voted to remove the regional dispatch item from committee. The motion passed 6–0.
The mayor said a meeting between county officials and COG mayors was scheduled for Jan. 16 but added he did not expect the regional dispatch proposal to move forward in the near term. Officials described continued vendor arrangements with North Olmsted for dispatch services and said the council will continue monitoring developments.
