Representatives of the Poteet Strawberry Festival and the Poteet Strawberry Growers Association presented to the Atascosa County Commissioners Court on March 24 to invite residents to the 78th annual festival April 10–13 and to describe the growers’ role and youth scholarships.
County Attorney Molly Solis introduced festival representatives, including Chris Lopez, president of the festival board, and multiple growers who said the festival supports scholarships and local youth. Chris Lopez told the court the festival had made changes and hoped visitors would notice renovations at the Poteet Lions Club Rodeo grounds and refreshed entertainment and vendor areas.
Alexandra Zavala and Isabella Ortiz (festival royalty) and growers including Christelle Casa Perez of Casa Farms and others said the growers plant roughly a half-million strawberry plants collectively (about 38 growers in the county) and noted that festival proceeds support scholarships such as the Anne Marie Franklin Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Rotary Club.
“...we plant a little over half a million strawberry plants between us, which is not enough to supply the demand,” Christelle Casa Perez said, adding the association had added new growers and welcomed additional participants.
The court and festival representatives posed for photos and exchanged thanks; no formal action or funding request was recorded on the agenda for the festival presentation. The next commissioners court meeting was scheduled for April 14, the Monday following the festival.
