Silver Haired Legislature rep urges Atascosa County to nominate a local representative and flag uncapped oil wells

Edward (Ed) Rogers, a resident of Boerne and deputy speaker pro tempore for the Texas Silver Haired Legislature (TSHL), addressed the Atascosa County Commissioners Court during public comments on March 24 seeking nominations for a county representative and urging attention to a resolution on uncapped oil wells.
Rogers said TSHL is a nonpartisan, volunteer nonprofit established by the Texas Legislature in 1985 to represent Texans age 60 and older. He told the court that Atascosa County did not currently have a TSHL representative and asked the court to consider nominating a local candidate.
“We were established in 1985 by the Texas legislature to serve as their voice of aging Texans,” Rogers said. He added that TSHL reaches out to county commissioner courts to identify nominees and that the organization had successfully advanced resolutions into bills at the state level.
Rogers also provided the court with a copy of a Railroad Commission report he said shows 34 uncapped oil wells in Atascosa County, and he mentioned that the Railroad Commission has requested a $100 million special budget adjustment to address uncapped wells statewide. He said 3,100 uncapped wells are on the commission’s statewide list.
Rogers asked the court to review the materials he provided, to contact state legislators about the resolutions under consideration, and to consider nominating a county representative to TSHL.
The court received Rogers’ brochure and resolution handouts and thanked him for his presentation. No formal action or vote by the court on Rogers’ requests was recorded in the meeting minutes.
