Downtown Alive announces mural project for 329 Laurel Street; design expected this summer

Hillary Howard, representing Downtown Alive, told the Community Appearance Board the group has property-owner approval and plans to present a mural design for 329 Laurel Street — the wall beside Stella’s Ice Cream — this summer, with student painters expected to execute the work in the fall.
Howard said property owners (Kingston Junction and the owners at 329 Laurel), and the tenants at Stella’s Ice Cream have given the project the go-ahead. She described the planned artwork as bright, pop-art–influenced imagery that will depict local flora, wildlife and historic structures in non-primary colors to enliven a concrete corner.
Howard said Conway Alive (Downtown Alive) has awarded two grants for improvements at the corner to Stella’s Ice Cream, and that the mural project will tie into previous beautification work such as string lighting, umbrellas and picnic tables. She said Conway Alive made a special exception to grant funding rules to allow Stella’s Ice Cream additional grant support for the site during its opening period.
Howard told the board she expects to present a design to the board this summer and for CCU students to paint the mural in the fall as part of coursework. No formal board action was required during the meeting; the item was heard during the public-input portion of the agenda.
