Conway board approves black awnings for municipal court at 206 Laurel Street

Chair, City of Conway Community Appearance Board, opened the meeting and the board approved a certificate of appropriateness for 206 Laurel Street, the Conway Municipal Court, to replace two damaged awnings and change the fabric from green-and-white stripes to solid black to match other downtown city awnings.

The change covers only the awning coverings; there will be no change to awning size or structure and the awnings will include no signage, staff said. Staff described the work as removing the existing awnings to allow the contractor to re-cover them offsite rather than working from lifts: "They just simply removed the awnings, structure to take them to the contractor so it was easier to put them on instead of having to be in the air while they're putting the new color on," said Staff member, City of Conway Planning Department.

The board heard that two other items shown in the packet — an application for 1106 Third Avenue and a separate item C in the same rendering — had been withdrawn by applicants and will return when redesigned. A board member made a motion to approve the 206 Laurel Street awning change "as presented," a second was given, and the board voted in favor; the motion carried.

There was no public comment at the meeting and no staff objections recorded. The board did not approve any signage or structural changes as part of this certificate.

The board will record the approved certificate of appropriateness in its minutes and the applicant may proceed with the contractor's installation under the conditions approved by the board.
