Council approves resurfacing and pump repair at Richard A. Young Community Center whirlpool

The Dearborn Heights City Council approved two separate items on March 25 to get the whirlpool at the Richard A. Young Community Center back into service. The council voted to award a resurfacing contract to Miracle Method for the pool shell and separately authorized Pool Scouts to replace the whirlpool circulation pump for $2,465.
Parks and Recreation Director Zaboznick told the council the whirlpool had failed state requirements because the pump was not circulating properly and the shell finish was falling apart after the pool was drained. He described finding multiple facility maintenance problems during a recent assessment and said vendors quoted up to $10,000 to repair the pump; the city chose a larger replacement pump and a commercial reglazing contractor it had found that would take less money.
Councilman Ahmad moved and Councilman Saab seconded the main resurfacing motion; it carried on voice vote. Councilwoman Bridal then moved the separate motion to purchase and install a replacement pump from Pool Scouts for $2,465, to be paid from the Parks and Recreation 2024–25 account (GL account noted in the agenda). That motion also carried.
The council and director also discussed other improvements at the community center: regrouting and repainting the whirlpool room after the resurfacing and following through on pump replacement so the whirlpool can be refilled and reopened.
The contract and pump replacement are funded from the Parks and Recreation 2024–25 operating accounts identified in the staff report.
