Police department reports certified candidates, backgrounds and required mental‑health training completed

Police Chief Bakke told the South Lyon City Council on March 24 that the department conducted an oral board for a candidate who passed and that two candidates who are already certified are moving forward through background checks.
Bakke said hiring certified candidates allows the department to place officers on the road sooner — potentially about three months earlier than hiring recruits who must attend the academy. He said two background investigations are ongoing on certified candidates and that the department hosted a citizen police academy session that covered patrol operations and use-of-force topics.
The chief also reported that the department completed required continuing professional education (CPE) mental‑health training this year; state rules required officers to complete at least eight hours of mental‑health training. The department completed training for half the staff jointly with Wolverine Lake and scheduled the other half for a later date.
No formal council action was recorded on police hiring or training at the meeting.
