Janesville School District administrators briefed the committee on August professional development activities designed to prepare staff for the school year and align district and building goals.
Administrators said August PD included districtwide sessions and building‑level work days. Elementary schools emphasized implementation of a new core reading resource and a linked intervention curriculum; staff also previewed a new elementary social studies resource adopted through the district’s curriculum process. Middle schools focused on new math and ELA resources and training to implement an added flex period; high school PD continued work on grading and assessment, AVID instructional strategies and career‑technical education training.
District staff noted they provided PD beyond certified teachers. Sessions included custodial and food‑service training, medication distribution for health aides, secretary training and casualty care updates. The district offered substitute teacher training for roughly 50–55 substitutes, covering classroom and behavior management and technology tools. Administrators said positive substitute feedback will prompt additional sessions in November and January.
The district also highlighted cross‑building teamwork: elementary teachers met across grade levels to analyze reading assessment data and adapt unit implementation. Leaders said they aimed to preserve uninterrupted work days for teachers to set up classrooms and plan for orientation and meet‑and‑greet activities before students arrived.
Administrators described ongoing equity and brain‑based learning work led by central office staff and noted that PD planning for the next August begins in January/February to coordinate departments and building needs.
