The Salem City Council granted National Grid’s petition to relocate a jointly owned utility pole from 4244 Highland Avenue to the corner of the driveway at 40 Rear Highland Avenue to bring three‑phase service to the property.
Sabita Mahabir Sheehy, representing National Grid, said the relocation is intended to provide three‑phase service to the 40 Rear property. Councilors raised safety concerns about placement because the driveway serves elderly housing; Councilor Morsello asked that the contractor ensure the pole’s final placement would not impede access or create a hazard.
Councilor Marcello moved to close the public hearing and then moved that the petition be granted; the motion carried on a voice vote. The council did not record an individual roll‑call tally in the minutes.
National Grid and the city will coordinate on exact placement and contractor marking to reduce pedestrian and vehicle safety risks at the driveway approach.
