Council approves $63,000 transfer to repair Old Burying Point and Witch Trials memorial

The Salem City Council on March 27 approved a transfer of $63,000 from Receipts Reserve (Charter Street) to the Capital Improvement Fund for repairs at the Old Burying Point and the Witch Trials memorial.
Councilor Merkel moved to suspend the rules and adopt the appropriation. The funds, requested by the Charter Street Welcome Center and Parks staff (per the council communication), will pay for repairs to paths, restoration of 11 historic headstones and pruning of trees and shrubs at the cemetery and memorial.
Councilors said the Welcome Center helps support cemetery maintenance and encouraged residents to visit the site. "This was partly established to support and maintain the grounds of the old burying point and the witch trials memorial," Merkel said during discussion.
The motion carried on a voice vote. The appropriation is authorized and the Capital Improvements Fund will proceed with the described repairs.
