Appleton West student board representative highlights Veterans Day, new facilities, academics and clubs

Aubrey Dieter, the student school board representative from Appleton West High School, gave the Appleton Area School District board an update Wednesday on school events, activities and recent student achievements.
Dieter said Appleton West held a Veterans Day assembly with choir and band performances and remarks from a veteran speaker. Students who attended the assembly later gathered to socialize in the school’s early American room, Dieter said, and she thanked veterans for their service.
Dieter reviewed homecoming activities from the week of Sept. 23, including spirit days and an outside dance; she noted that many students have asked for the dance to return indoors and that administrators are hearing that feedback. She also praised the student council and staff for new additions to spirit week.
Dieter described facilities and program additions at Appleton West: a new indoor physical-education and practice facility adjacent to the track, a recently painted mural near the cafeteria representing students with disabilities, and a new ATEC learning lab the presentation said is the first of its kind in the state.
Dieter reported student-led activity highlights: a Nov. 1 blood drive organized by National Honor Society drew 80 donors; West hosted 10 college representatives for a direct-admit event that resulted in 154 students receiving automatic acceptance offers and more than $2,500,000 in scholarships, she said. She also listed extracurricular growth: 25 school-sponsored clubs this year and new competitive rock-climbing and pickleball clubs.
On athletics, Dieter said Appleton West offered 11 fall athletics programs with increased participation (from 195 students last year to 240 this year) and noted state-level success in cross country and conference championships in soccer. She closed by thanking the board and offering to answer questions.
Board members complimented Dieter’s report and asked clarifying questions about programs and scholarships.
