District staff reported compliance with R2 standards for fine arts and STEAM offerings and summarized participation in music, athletics and other electives.
Staff said the district has expanded community events tied to music and art programming and is building additional STEAM programming into general curriculum and gifted services. A board member asked whether International Baccalaureate (IB) items listed on the materials were unique to Starbucks (the school referenced in the packet); staff confirmed IB items listed for middle schools were specific to Starbucks.
Board members pushed staff for a breakdown of participation in band, choir and other electives by school to assess equity; staff said sixth-grade general music is required districtwide and that elective uptake varies because the district operates specialty campuses such as Gilmore Fine Arts that attract students with focused interests. Staff said they can aggregate elective participation by building, with the caveat that specialty-school enrollment skews school-level counts. The presenter also said the district offers a sliding scale for instrument rental and that some students receive instruments at no cost through the program.
Board members welcomed the inclusion of esports and confirmed swimming classes use the district aquatic center.
