Summary
Architects presented a design update for Walden 3 that emphasizes accessibility, security and building repairs; district staff said it will recommend Fendorf Construction as construction manager at risk for board approval March 17.
Racine Unified School District board members heard a design update for renovations at Walden 3 and were told the work will focus on accessibility, building envelope repairs, new secure entry controls and interior reconfigurations to meet district standards.
The presentation by Eric Meigren of Partners in Design Architects described a secure vestibule with an Evolv screening system, relocation of the main office to an accessible central location, installation of a three-floor elevator and a chair lift for another portion of the building, full Americans with Disabilities Act restroom upgrades, renovation of locker rooms and conversion of the second-floor locker room into a fitness center and PA offices. Meigren also said the project will correct “significant failures in the stone and brick facade” on the building’s north elevation and do targeted site work including restriping parking, replacing deteriorated sidewalk squares and preparing a future concrete slab for a greenhouse.
Board members asked about air conditioning, parking capacity during events and whether students park in the lot; Meigren confirmed the renovations include air conditioning and described the elevator and lift locations. The board discussed visitor parking as a potential budget-dependent addition and asked staff to check student parking rules with the principal.
District staff also told the board the highest-scored proposer for construction manager at risk services is Fendorf Construction; staff said they will recommend the board approve that selection at the March 17 business meeting. No formal vote on the CMAR selection was recorded during the work session.
The board received floor plans and renderings during the presentation; staff said the plans will not be made public for safety and security reasons but that the board has the floor plans on hand.
