Metcalfe Playfield renovation described as larger scope; administration says $800,000 in grants offset costs

Details presented to committee
Jason Wilke, recreation design development specialist, told the committee the contract value is approximately $6.7 million. He said about $1.5 million of that total is for a building renovation to create a larger community room requested by the Metcalfe Park community group, and the project also includes a full basketball court, a football field with lighting (in partnership with the Boys & Girls program), a splash pad, additional shade structures (about seven or eight), and a misting station to address neighborhood heat-relief concerns. The contract also includes a soils allowance of $112,000 as a contingency for unforeseen site conditions.
Wilke said the district has secured roughly $800,000 in grant funding for Metcalfe, including a Knowles-Nelson grant and an FCPP grant tied to Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) green infrastructure funding, to help offset costs.
Administration said previous nearby playfield projects had lower scopes or omitted elements now included at Metcalfe (for example, Wick Playfield’s roughly $4 million scope did not include a building renovation or the same green infrastructure elements). Committee members asked FMS to provide a full funding breakdown and grant documentation to the committee.
