The Albuquerque Public Schools Finance Committee on March 26 reviewed a $20,499,000 request-for-proposal for Phase A of Taylor Middle School and heard questions about phasing, timing and cost.
Associate Superintendent Chris Haugus presented the RFP and told the committee the Phase A scope would "be partial demolition of the existing main school building, and it will be replaced with the 2 story addition, which will include the administration, health office, counseling suite, library, multimedia center, performing arts classroom, and an art classroom, and also an outdoor dining courtyard and, outdoor classroom." The RFP was submitted by Bradbury Stamm Construction.
Board Member Josefina Dominguez asked how many phases the project includes and whether Phase B had a budget. Karen Allred (capital projects) said there are two phases and that Phase B is expected to be a classroom wing. On potential cost for Phase B she said, "It's not gonna be less than 20,000,000, but it'll probably be something above 20,000,000," noting construction-price inflation and that Phase B had not been budgeted yet but is planned for a future bond election.
Staff told the committee this Taylor work traces to the 2021 bond package and that the district has planned rightsizing and phased construction to align increased enrollment with capacity. Haugus and Allred described construction staging and site preparations to allow students to remain on campus, and said the district has worked to provide safe walking routes and temporary space during work.
No final board approval occurred in the committee; the RFP and related signature-authority request were listed for recommendation on the consent agenda for the full Board of Education.
Ending: Staff said Bradbury Stamm has performed projects on active campuses previously and construction managers will coordinate with school leaders during phases; Phase B budgeting and the bond timeline will be addressed in future board materials.
