Waunakee students outline clubs and events; board plans monthly "Warrior Spotlight"

Two high-school students gave the student report at the Waunakee board’s Feb. 10 meeting, outlining upcoming spring sports, club competitions and performances, and the board agreed to pilot a monthly student “Warrior Spotlight” beginning in March.
Students Abigail and Alina updated the board on spring-sport captain practices and open gyms for softball, soccer and lacrosse; club events including drama, DECA, FBLA and HOSA competitions; and upcoming performances such as the high-school production of 12 Angry Jurors and a Madison Symphony Orchestra visit. They also said spring activity registration and solo-and-ensemble festival preparations are under way, and noted Project Graduation planning and course-request windows for next year.
Dr. Kelsey Brown told the board staff will begin a monthly student-spotlight series, tentatively called the “Warrior Spotlight,” to showcase students and programs from across district schools. The district plans to invite building-level groups monthly; Arboretum Elementary fourth-grade announcers and their service club were mentioned as a planned March participant. Staff said the idea is to rotate student groups so the board and the public can hear directly from different grade levels and programs.
No formal board action was required to start the Spotlight; the board asked trustees to suggest groups, teams or clubs they would like to see highlighted. The board also approved related calendar and workshop dates later in the meeting.
The student report and the new Spotlight plan were informational; they do not create a new program budget or change district policy at this time.
