Board approves citizens advisory committee to study school naming; four meetings scheduled

The McFarland School Board voted Jan. 13 to form a citizens advisory facilities naming committee and approved membership drawn from community volunteers, students and staff. The board asked the committee to investigate historical facts, weigh community views and make a recommendation for the board to consider prior to upcoming board membership changes in April.
The committee will meet four times, beginning Thursday, Jan. 16, in the board room. Administration materials presented to the board outline that the committee should be a community‑led group (staff must be a minority of members) with a recommended size of 12–16 people and steps to request outside historical research if needed. The administration told the board it will present known background materials at the first meeting and help the committee identify additional information the group needs.
Board members emphasized transparency, diverse viewpoints and public communications; they also supported pausing deeper work last fall while a district referendum was underway. The board majority approved the committee membership and the process, and administration will select a community chair from among the appointed members.
Ending: The committee’s recommendation will come to the board for a majority vote. The board did not set a binding timetable beyond the target to conclude work before the April board reorganization.
