McFarland students report on Community Week; board recognizes crossing guards

A student representative from McFarland High School briefed the board on student activities for the week of Feb. 17, 2025, highlighting Community Week, upcoming concerts and postseason athletic competitions.
The student said Community Week events were organized by different clubs — “student council” for Monday’s Spartan gear day, a newer club called “Letters of Love” for Tuesday, the “Hope Squad” for Wednesday and a Connect club-hosted twin day on Thursday. The student also noted the jazz ensemble concert scheduled for Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the PAC and a “String Fling” performance on Feb. 22 involving fifth graders through high school students.
Athletic updates included varsity basketball and hockey schedules and postseason starts for hockey and wrestling; the student and board members congratulated wrestlers and swimmers who advanced to sectional and state competition.
In district administration reports, staff marked Adult Crossing Guard Recognition Week (declared by the state superintendent) and publicly thanked the district’s roughly 10 crossing guards for daily service in extreme weather and for improving student safety. A district official said crossing guards commented that staggered school start and end times have reduced congestion and improved safety during drop-off and pick-up.
A school-safety written drill evaluation was also reported under the statutory notification procedure; an administrator summarized a private staff response to a student in distress and said the review focused on protecting student privacy and lessons learned about staff positioning and visibility during incidents.
