Board approves summer flooring and concrete work at Beloit Memorial and Aldridge after competitive bids

The School District of Beloit Board of Education approved replacement and refurbishment of flooring at Beloit Memorial High School and Aldridge Middle School on March 4, after the Business Operations and Finance Committee reviewed bids and recommended the work.
Facilities staff described the work as two discrete elements: a dyed, polished concrete finish for ground-floor common areas at Beloit Memorial and a full replacement of auditorium carpeting at Aldridge. Facilities presenter Mr. Brickell said parts of the high-school carpeting date to 1994 and have deteriorated, and district safety concerns at the Aldridge auditorium include tears and ripped transition points.
An RFP posted January 9 drew three contractors to a mandatory walkthrough and two formal bids. Administration reported the lowest responsible bid was from Mako's Commercial Interiors (formerly Halvorsen's) at $70,494 for both projects combined. Administration told the board the project is included in the FY25 budget and will be completed during summer 2025 to minimize disruption; Aldridge's summer vacancy due to roofing work presents an opportunity to stage the work there.
Board action: The Business Operations and Finance Committee moved the item to the full board for consideration; at the March 4 regular meeting the board approved the flooring package as part of the consent agenda (motion by Brian Nichols, second by Megan Miller). The consent vote was recorded as unanimous.
Board members asked why bids differed; administration said both bidders proposed the same listed materials (Mannington flooring for the high school) and had the same walkthrough conditions, and that bid variance is not uncommon in commercial projects. Administration said it would share details on materials and warranties if the board requested further information.
Next steps: Administration will return with contract documents, schedules and warranty details and will coordinate work windows with summer-school programming and the Aldridge roofing project.
Ending: District officials said the projects address safety and long-term maintenance costs and will use FY25 capital budget funds already appropriated for the work.
