Highway report: crews battled winter storms, will expand pothole work as mud season approaches

The Candia highway/public works representative told the Select Board on March 10 that February produced several snow events and increased workload for winter maintenance crews.
The department said it hauled winter sand, ran three spreader runs and managed seven plow events during the month. Crews pulled back and shelved banks in multiple locations and performed patching work on local roads including Old Candy Road and Okay Road. The presenter said the dirt roads plowed better this winter because they remained frozen longer, reducing freeze–thaw damage until late February.
Public works plans to increase spending and effort on pothole repairs for the spring and will address shallower potholes that cause nuisance and encourage drivers to go around repairs. The department cautioned that mud season will begin as temperatures warm, which will cause road movement on dirt roads and may alter timing for some repairs.
No formal policy motions or budget votes were taken at the meeting; the board heard the operational update and thanked crews for patching performance during the winter.
