Bay City ISD presents attendance and assessment trends, highlights gains at Cherry campus

District staff presented quarterly attendance and assessment figures and highlighted improvements at Cherry campus and other grade levels during the Bay City ISD Board of Trustees meeting.

A presenter for Cherry — identified in the meeting as the Cherry campus representative — reported a number of percentage figures for various measures and subgroups. The presenter said the campus' current measure (speaker did not name the exact metric) was 28% overall with subgroup breakdowns: Hispanic 26%, white 37%, African American 17%, economically disadvantaged 21%. The presenter also said first grade began the year at 21% and is now at 54%, exceeding that grade’s goal. For another grade-level measure the presenter said "we are at 53% and we need to get to 62." The speaker described ongoing work to align assessments with third-grade standards and said the campus expects to present updated data in May or July.

Trustees praised principals and staff for the reported gains. "Thank you so much, Sherry and Lenny Lawrence, for all you're doing," one trustee said while recognizing campus teams for student success. District leaders said they will continue to track attendance closely because the numbers affect waiver eligibility and incentives for staff.

District staff noted that a low-attendance waiver qualification date will affect calculations, and cautioned that some numbers in the packet carry an asterisk and may change depending on final attendance counts. The board later approved the waivers discussed during this presentation.

The district also discussed Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and transportation as areas of focus for consistency across campuses. Staff said they plan to share transportation-related PBIS metrics in future reports.

The board scheduled additional campus data presentations later in the year and expects staff to return with updated assessment results at the May or July meetings.
