Alton notifies Wolfeboro it will exit household hazardous waste partnership; selectmen pause sign installation pending contract details

Town Manager Jim Zardy told the Board of Selectmen on March 26 that the Town of Alton has informed Wolfeboro it intends to withdraw from the intermunicipal household hazardous waste (HHW) program, and that the board should delay installing a new sign at the HHW facility until the program’s future is clearer.
Zardy said the town received a public letter from Alton that the town is exercising its option to dissolve the intermunicipal agreement and that, if formally pursued, the program dissolution would take effect Dec. 31, 2025 (Alton’s letter requests April 1 notice). Zardy said Wolfeboro currently has a contract for six HHW collections in 2025 and that Lakes Region Planning Commission is working on service arrangements for 2025.
Because Alton’s correspondence arrived this week and the program’s long‑term structure is unsettled, Zardy said staff recommended holding off on placing a sign on the HHW building until decisions about facility use and partnerships are finalized. He suggested erecting temporary signage at posts if the board wants immediate direction to help residents locate scheduled events.
The board did not make a decision on signage at the meeting; Zardy said staff will continue work with Lakes Region Planning Commission and with Alton on service specifics and contracts for 2025 collections.
