School committee adopts amended inclusive 2025–26 calendar, will publish informational calendar of cultural observances

The Springfield School Committee voted March 27 to adopt an amended 2025–26 school calendar described by district staff as an “inclusive calendar.”
Doctor Balch and School Committee member Miss Hurst presented options that the district’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion subcommittee reviewed, including a calendar that denotes federal holidays and an informational attachment listing a broader set of cultural and religious observances the district will recognize in an informational way.
Miss Hurst said the subcommittee recommended adopting the inclusive calendar that shows federal holidays with a nonexhaustive list of other celebrations attached. During discussion some members asked for confirmation that the packet before them matched the version being voted on; the clerk confirmed the packet included an “informational calendar” attachment that denotes holidays such as Three Kings Day.
Vice Chair Monroe Naylor moved approval and the committee approved the amended inclusive 2025–26 calendar by roll call vote.
The district said the informational calendar will be posted electronically for families and that the packet contains multiple draft calendar options for review.
