Town staff told councilors the town plans to close and remove a short section of Kedron (Kettering) Church Road that crosses a creek after several winter incidents in which vehicles drove through the creek and created icy hazards on adjacent roads.
Tom (staff member) said the roadway has been used as a cut-through between Rocky Fork Amble and Rocky Fork Road for years and that recent winter incidents โ including vehicles dragging water onto Rocky Fork Road that later froze โ prompted the town to move forward with removing the creek-crossing segment. "Recently this last winter we had several cars drive through going ... through the creek, and we're dragging up water onto Rocky Fork Road. It froze and caused several accidents," Tom said.
Tom described the implementation timeline: message boards will be placed at each end of the segment beginning March 31; barricades will be installed April 14; and the town plans to remove the roadway and regrade the area to restore soil and grass beginning May 1. He said affected landowners who have driveways connected to the road had been notified and the removed section is about 1,300 feet long.
Council members noted local memories of driving the creek in childhood and expressed mixed nostalgia and support for the safety decision. Staff said the change is a public-safety measure and that the detour adds only a short distance to local travel.
