Locust Valley students showcase DECA and Model UN successes to the school board

The board heard presentations from students and staff about recent DECA and Model United Nations activities and successes.
DECA presentation Joe Naya, district director of business, introduced the DECA team and adviser Laura Matka, who described competitive events across marketing, finance, hospitality, entrepreneurship and other career clusters. The presentation listed student participants and highlighted results from regional competitions and state-level events in Rochester. Student CJ McKenzie, who attended professional-selling events, said the experience was "a really eye-opening experience" even though his presentation did not advance to the next level.
Model UN presentation Dr. Michelle Gaglione, Model UN advisor and international-relations teacher, introduced students from the newly established high-school international-relations course and the Model UN club. Senior Katie Keebler, secretary general of the school—s Model UN program, summarized recent awards at multiple conferences and highlighted that a student achieved the program—s first-ever "best delegate" honor at a university competition. Co-president Wyatt Robertson described plans to expand the advanced international-relations class and to target collegiate-level conferences next year.
Board response and recognition Trustees praised students and advisors for public speaking, research and leadership skills. The board thanked staff for supporting these extracurriculars and encouraged continued growth in enrollment and competitiveness.
Ending Students posed for a group photo at the conclusion of the presentations; the board said it will continue to support and publicize these student programs.
