County engineers presented a technical briefing on a major slope repair project that stemmed from a large roadway failure first observed in 2019. The presentation detailed subsurface investigations, boring locations, geophysical (mass wave) studies, and design decisions that led to soil-nail walls, shotcrete facing, wick drains and micropile caps to stabilize upper and lower road sections.
Engineers said water infiltration and subsurface flow were the driving causes of the failure and explained the need for subsurface stabilization rather than surface-only repairs. County crews performed clearing, excavation benches and substantial earth hauling (staff reported roughly 5,200 cubic yards moved) and completed most of the visible wall and cap work; the presentation included photos showing construction stages and final shotcrete face and drain installations.
Commissioners praised the county workforce for performing much of the work in-house and thanked the property owner for providing site access and accepting restoration material. The county engineer said remaining work includes micropiles and final capping and that the approach was chosen to provide a long-term stabilization solution rather than repeated temporary repairs.
