Board weighs K—12 cell-phone limits; trustees favor expanding current bans to high school

Trustees said the middle-school rule has produced measurable classroom and social benefits and urged a carefully phased approach for older students. "We have seen extraordinary results in terms of our children K through 8, really reengaging with one another and reengaging with their educators," said Lauren (board member). Trustees said the district will maintain exceptions for medical needs or other documented reasons.
Board consensus and next steps Trustees expressed general support for expanding phone restrictions, with several members urging strong parent engagement and explicit communication plans. Administrators noted systems to allow students to contact families (for example, a dedicated phone in the office) will remain in place, and they asked parents to avoid sending nonurgent messages during school hours. The board did not adopt a final policy at the meeting but directed staff to develop draft policy language, implementation procedures and communication materials for future review.
Ending Trustees said they will revisit a proposed K—12 policy and phase any change to minimize disruption and ensure parents and staff are on board.
