Ken Packer (summer recreation coordinator) and other staff summarized planned changes to the district—s summer recreation and academic programs aimed at making them sustainable.
Key changes presented - Fee increase: the weekly fee for the summer recreation program will rise from $199 last year to $250 this year to reduce the program—s operating losses. - Online registration and early sign-up: registration is expected to open in April with an early-registration period ending in May so the district can size staffing and programming appropriately. - Capacity and staffing: the program will cap enrollment at 70 participants per week to match staffing levels and reduce the risk of running the program under-resourced. - Transportation and drop-off/pick-up: parents will be responsible for transporting participants; district transportation will not be provided for these programs.
Academic and extended-year programs Administrators also reviewed changes to academic summer offerings: the academic summer program will run for four weeks at a district elementary site; credit recovery and Regents review will continue at the intermediate school; extended-year special education programs receive state aid and are not optional.
Rationale and next steps Board members said the district had previously subsidized summer recreation and was losing money in recent years; trustees supported the changes to reduce recurring losses and keep the program available for families who want it. The board asked staff to prepare registration materials, financial projections and outreach to families prior to the April/May registration window.
Ending Staff noted summer program staffing recruits and volunteer sign-ups will be organized in the coming weeks and that further details will be included in parent communications.
