The Prince George's County Board of Education voted 9-0 on March 27 to close its business meeting and move into an executive session, citing internal and external audit reports, pending legal matters, personnel appointments and collective bargaining agreement updates.
Brandon Jackson, chairman of the Prince George's County Board of Education, read a statement saying the meeting would be closed under Maryland's General Provisions Article §3-305 and listed the reasons for the executive session. Jackson said the board would discuss "internal and external audit reports because discussing personal information in a public setting could lead to financial losses, reputational damage, or legal action," "legal matters, because discussing pending litigation in public may impact ongoing legal issues to the detriment of the district," "personal appointments and staffing, because publicly disclosing applicants' personal information will not protect their identities and could discourage candidates from applying," and "collective bargaining agreement updates because public disclosure of the agreement, terms before they are finalized may result in lawsuits and financial fines."
After the reading, the chair asked, "Shall the Prince George's County Board of Education close the 03/27/2025 meeting?" Board members recorded nine affirmative votes and the chair declared, "The motion to close the 03/27/2025 Prince George's County Board of Education meeting is adopted." Board members were then instructed to proceed to the Executive Room.
Board members present and recorded on the roll call included Board member Miss Busy Stretler; Board member Mr. Briggs; Board member Miss Brown; Board member Miss Goins McCants; Board member Mr. Jango; Board member Dr. Moss; Board member Miss Walker; and Chairman Brandon Jackson. Miss Barton conducted the roll call. The transcript records nine votes in the affirmative; no no votes, abstentions, or recorded opposition appear in the public portion of the transcript.
The public transcript contains only the roll call, the statutory statement read by the chairman explaining the legal basis and reasons for closure, the recorded affirmative votes, and the board's move to the executive session. No further public deliberations or outcomes from the executive session are recorded in the provided transcript.
