Delray Beach commission selects leadership, approves calendar and proclamations list

The Delray Beach City Commission completed its organizational business March 27, electing leadership, confirming Community Redevelopment Agency officers and approving an amended meeting calendar and proclamations schedule.
Commissioners voted to name Tom Markert as vice mayor and Angela Burns as deputy vice mayor for terms beginning March 28, 2025. The commission also appointed Commissioner Angela Burns as chair and Commissioner Tom Markert as vice chair of the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). Those selections were made by voice vote during the organizational portion of the meeting.
The commission designated a voting delegate and alternate to the Palm Beach County League of Cities. One commissioner volunteered to continue as delegate and Commissioner Markert accepted the alternate role; commissioners approved the designations. The panel also approved an updated list of city proclamations for 2025, adding an April 25 Parental Alienation Awareness Day and confirming other items on the annual schedule. The commission removed a previously proposed proclamation concerning a sexually-transmitted-disease awareness item after staff review and recommendation.
A substantial portion of the meeting was spent consolidating the commission’s 2025 meeting calendar to reduce back-to-back dates and consolidate workshops and regular meetings where possible. Commissioners agreed to multiple changes including moving several workshops onto regular meeting dates in July, August, December and January; the amended calendar was approved by motion.
On consent the commission approved one item: a minor plat application, by voice vote.
Why it matters: Organizational selections determine who will represent Delray Beach at events and on advisory bodies through the coming year. The calendar consolidation aims to reduce meeting congestion and create clearer opportunities for workshop and budget work.
