District completes Garfield rezoning notifications; staffing and citizen committee tours advance middle-school redesign

Sandra Hernandez told trustees that rezoning letters for Garfield-area students were mailed and received, and that New Tech Academy acceptance letters were being distributed. Hernandez demonstrated the district's online school locator, which lets families enter an address and see zoned elementary and middle schools aligned to Google Maps.
Staffing and logistics: Hernandez said middle-school staffing was completed after student counts were determined and principals have begun assigning teachers based on course offerings and enrollment. Elementary principals are finalizing staffing after receiving lists of students rezoned to their campuses; administrators expect staffing meetings to occur in the third or fourth week of April.
Citizen committee and facilities input: a citizens committee toured Buena Vista Elementary, San Felipe Memorial Middle School and the freshman campus to document facility needs. The committee will reconvene to recommend and prioritize capital projects for future consideration.
Support for reassigned teachers: administrators said reassigned teachers will receive district-provided boxes and the district will move their materials; the district will also offer eight hours of extra-duty pay to help teachers pack and set up classrooms at new assignments.
