Accessibility commission prepares questions and vision statement for crosswalk mural project

The Town of Danvers Accessibility Commission discussed next steps for a planned crosswalk mural and agreed to clarify project scope with town staff and the project manager.

Commission member Fawn said she had compiled questions to ask the town project manager and planning committee, including the project timeline and start date, minimum crosswalk dimensions required, who must approve the final design, and how supplies would be provided or funded. Members agreed those questions should be raised in an initial meeting with town staff.

Several commissioners said the high school art students should have a leading role in the design and recommended sharing the commission’s vision statement with the art department so students could begin concept sketches. Proposed language the commission discussed included an accessibility-focused vision emphasizing inclusion, equity and the removal of barriers; commissioners suggested that the statement be used as a design guide rather than a prescriptive brief.

Members also discussed contingency options if the crosswalk project does not proceed (for example, reusing student designs as murals on private property or other public art locations). One commissioner volunteered to contact town planning and sign-permitting staff to check whether a private mural would require a zoning or sign-ordinance review.

Ending: Commissioners agreed the chair would send the vision statement and the compiled list of questions to the project manager (Mr. Surrette or his office) and to the high school art department, and to follow up with town staff about any permitting constraints.
