The Akron City Special Board voted 5-0 on March 20, 2025, to approve the amounts and tax rates determined by the county and certified by the Budget Commission, a step staff said is required under the Ohio Revised Code.
Dr. Thompson, a staff member, told the board the approval is a ministerial requirement: “This is simply to approve the tax rates that are set by the county, sent to us, and then by Ohio Revised Code, must be approved by the board, although the board has no authority or administration to change said tax rates,” he said. He added the form must be returned to the county fiscal officer and that it is due by Monday.
Member Autry moved to approve the amounts and tax rates; Member Sykes seconded. A roll-call vote recorded yes from Reverend Harrison, Miss Jackson, Mrs. Sykes, Mister Alexander and Miss Autry. The motion carried five-zero. Dr. Thompson’s remarks and the roll-call vote were the substantive actions recorded on the agenda item listed as “approval of the amounts and tax rates as determined by the Budget Commission.”
The meeting record shows five members present and two absent at the start of the special meeting. After the tax-rate vote the board voted 5-0 to adjourn; Member Autry moved to adjourn and Member Alexander seconded.
The board did not propose or adopt any changes to the county-certified rates; the action reported was an approval to comply with the procedural requirement described by staff.
