Commission readies talking points for April council workshop on town hall and community center topics

The Community Engagement Commission spent a substantial portion of its March 19 meeting discussing a likely city council workshop and a possible town‑hall meeting focused on library and community center issues, including whether and how the commission should gather and present public input.

Commission members said they want the town‑hall format to be more informative than a standard open‑mic session. Participants proposed explaining where the process stands, what decisions are fixed by law or funding, what a bond would mean for taxpayers and what options the public can influence. Commissioners discussed ways to structure the meeting to reduce repetition and to increase clarity for attendees.

Bill Norman and other commissioners raised concerns about whether city councilors will act on surveys or public input and urged the commission to plan a compact, evidence‑based presentation and a clear list of what the commission expects from council during the allotted time. Commissioners suggested preparing a short, ordered set of talking points and a script so multiple commissioners can present succinctly within an estimated 45‑minute window the council had offered.

Staff and commissioners also discussed several specific content ideas: an explainer about bonds and tax impacts, a timeline showing where the project stands, a summary of options (library only, library plus community center, add amenities such as a pool), and ways to document who attended and why. Commissioners agreed to form a small drafting group to prepare a bullet list of priorities for the workshop and to circulate a draft within about a week.

No formal direction or decision on a town‑hall date or format was voted on at the meeting; the commission plans to refine the agenda and submit proposed talking points to staff for the April council workshop.
