The Springfield Board of License Commissioners on March 26 approved a family transfer of the Benton Park package store license to 5 21 State Street, Inc., keeping the existing manager and operations in place.
The Springfield Board of License Commissioners on March 26 approved the transfer of an alcohol package store license for Benton Park package store, 521 State Street, from Aurora Inc. to 5 21 State Street, Inc., with Mayank Kumar listed as manager of record.
The commission approved the transfer after attorney Dan Kelly described the change as a family rearrangement: “it's really a corporate change, more estate planning,” Kelly said, adding that the business will keep the same name and employees and that the son, who has served as manager for seven to eight years, will continue as manager.
Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the transfer. Commissioner Kaye, Commissioner D'Angelo Antonio, Commissioner Ramirez and Commissioner Espinosa all recorded “yes” votes during a roll call following the motion to approve.
The recorded ownership breakdown supplied at the hearing showed Sunay Kumar would hold 60% and Mayank Kumar 40%. Attorney Kelly said the longtime owner, Satish Kumar, has operated the store for about 24 years and that the transfer is intended to keep the business in the family.
The commission did not place additional conditions on the transfer at the meeting.
