Committee backs bill encouraging blood‑donation instruction in schools; near‑unanimous vote

Megan briefed the measure, saying it “encourages school districts, charter schools, and state tribal education compact schools to provide instruction and awareness of blood donation, and it allows this instruction to be included in at least one health class necessary for graduation beginning in the 25‑26 school year.” There were no amendments to the bill in committee.
Representative Mike Marshall, who supported the bill, described his experience working in blood banking and the consequences of low blood supplies, and he emphasized that in‑school education about donation can increase awareness; he noted parental consent is required for donations. Representative Donaghy also urged a yes vote, saying “blood is life” and supporting increased education about donation.
On the clerk’s roll call the committee recorded 18 ayes and 1 nay. By that vote the committee reported Senate Bill 5,641 with a due‑pass recommendation.
The bill will move to the House floor for further consideration.
